SOPA May Be On The Backburner, But The Battle Over Internet Regulation Isn't

After last week's online protests by the likes of Wikipedia, Reddit and others, the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and its sister legislation, the Protect IP Act (PIPA), appear to have had their journey through the U.S. Congress indefinitely stopped. Representatives of both the House of Representatives Judiciary Committee and the U.S. Senate announced last Friday that voting on the anti-piracy bills would be postponed "until there is wider agreement on the issue."

Senator's Twitter Account Hacked

It's the real thing this time, folks. No lewd pictures or phony excuses...A U.S. senator's Twitter account was actually hacked on Monday afternoon.

The much-exercised account of Sen. Chuck Grassley, a prolific tweeter, was hacked, according to spokeswoman Jill Kozeny, though the offender will not take much pleasure out of the fact that the senator was actually in an airplane en route from his home state of Iowa to Washington for the beginning of the new session. He never knew what hit him.

SOPA and PIPA Derailed by Popular Objection, Opponents Warn ACTA Contains Similar Problems

Support for the Stop Online Piracy Act and the PROTECT-IP Act collapsed last week in the face of massive public outcry and a January 18 internet blackout. Google reported that millions people signed its petition against the legislation.

Senate Majority Leader Reid postponed a vote on PIPA, prompting a cool response from Sen. Leahy, who sponsored the bill.

In the House, Rep. Smith postponed action on SOPA “until there is wider agreement on a solution” to online piracy.

Writers and activists are pointing out that the Anticounterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) threatens to require the same type of tough IP Enforcement on nations that accede to it.

Summary: The hacktivist group Anonymous will not be attacking Facebook at 12:00 AM EST on January 28, 2012. Anonymous has denied the claims made in a video released earlier today.

The hacktivist group Anonymous has been very active in the last few days, including taking down the websites for the DOJ, RIAA, MPAA, Universal Music, and Vivendi. Even CBS, ZDNet’s parent company, was hit by a Domain Name System (DNS) poisoning attack. Earlier today, a video explaining a plan to attack Facebook at 12:00 AM EST on January 28, 2012 was released.

Anonymous Denies Plans to Take Down Facebook

Anonymous on Monday denied that it was planning to take down Facebook on Jan. 28.

"Again we must say that we will not attack #Facebook! Again the mass media lie," the group tweeted from the @AnonOps feed.

(Reuters) - U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley's Twitter account was hacked on Monday with bogus tweets attacking his stance on Internet anti-piracy legislation, his office said.

Grassley, an Iowa Republican and prolific tweeter, had at least eight false tweets posted as he was on a flight heading from Iowa to Washington, spokeswoman Jill Kozeny said.

His staff noticed his Twitter account had been broken into a few minutes after the first false tweet was posted and called Twitter to have the password changed, his office said.

The demise of SOPA and PIPA, as temporary as it may be, means attention is now turning to ACTA (the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement). ACTA is a trade agreement that has already been signed by the United States and is even worse than SOP/PIPA. Trade Agreements do not require the same type of scrutiny that bills and laws do so ACTA was able to squeak by unnoticed. Australia, Canada, the European Union, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Morocco, New Zealand, Singapore, Switzerland and the United States are all signatories, but pressure is already being applied to other countries to join. The EU has not yet signed ACTA but has to do so before May 2013.
